Solemnity of the Most Holy Spirit — A Reflection By Ralph Iskaros

The doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity can be easily asserted, but it is hard to comprehend fully. It is the revelation of the nature of three divine Persons: The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, who is one whole being, one God, not three Gods. The three Persons are equal, uncreated, equally eternal, and all-powerful. This mystery surpasses all human understanding, yet it is the central doctrine of our Christian faith and the foundation of our relationship with God. The word trinity is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, yet it was revealed to us that the three Persons
are a singular God in both the Old and New Testaments.

• “I, it is I who am the first, and am I the last.” (Isaiah 48:12).
• “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone!” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
• “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.” (John 1:1-3).
• “But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the holy Spirit and
retained part of the price of the land?”” (Acts 5:3).
• “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19).
• “Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist.” (1 Corinthians 8:6).
“Our profession of faith begins with God, for God is the First and the Last, the beginning and the end of everything. The Credo begins with God the Father, for the Father is the first divine person of the Most Holy Trinity; our Creed begins with the creation of heaven and earth, for creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God’s works.” (Catechism §198).

We clearly express this in the Nicene Creed:

• I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
• I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father. [consubstantial is of the same substance and nature.]
• I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

Although the Most Holy Trinity is ineffable, it is not a vague or abstract hypothesis; it is God’s truth of being, His nature of love and intimacy, that He invites us to encounter and be in communion with. We call it a mystery because it can’t be explained or fully comprehended.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” (2 Corinthians 13:13).
