MYP COMMUNITY CHANGES LIVES, RAISING MONEY FOR THOSE IN NEED By Tom Leavens

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The MYP ended the year by changing lives with our annual fundraising drive to assist those in need. From 2022 to 2023, we have raised and donated over $9,000.00 for food and other support.

At our annual MYP Christmas Day events, we incorporate a service project for the teens to contribute to = making cards for the elderly or veterans, collecting presents for teens, even caroling at Nursing Homes (which many of you will remember). We continue to do that, but we now look for ways for our MYP Community to get involved as well. This year, we directed our focus on two programs.

The first program is support for 300 families in the College Point area. We have partnered with Tom Lynch, Youth Director at Holy Trinity Church. Tom is intimately involved with a number of groups in College Point who provide aid to those in need: replenishing food pantries, providing supermarket gift cards & direct food shopping. He is so grateful to the MYP for all we do!

The second is a program called the St. Fidelis Street Outreach Ministry, which directly helps the homeless living on the streets of College Point. I met Sr. Ruth Lautt (the program organizer) where I work (Thomas Berry Place in Jamaica, NY) & was inspired by her ministry. Please check their website at https://stfidelischurch.org/ministries/street-outreach.

The final total for our charity fundraiser is $2,500.00. Thank you for your generosity! This is a tremendous success! I am so grateful to this MYP Community. I am hopeful that the number of people & families in need will decrease in time. Let’s continue to pray even harder for that day!
